Continuing the Process of Downsizing and Decluttering

Downsizing and Resizing. Making Small Spaces Work!

I had a big job ahead of me when we decided to make the move to Florida, and downsizing was going to be key, knowing we were totally resizing our lives and my business. Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, was so helpful for me in beginning my new adventure of downsizing. It has and will continue to be a process. With our condo renovation almost done and looking ahead to when we move in, I’m now worried about all my “stuff” that I carefully thought about before packing (yes, I did pack myself before the movers came) that is now about to arrive…. Yikes!!! I think I still have too much.

home office in progress
My home office is almost done! Can’t wait to get in there and get to work.

I am keeping a small home office (check out the photo – coming along!) and I also rented a small space, about 10’ x 20’, to house all my interior design catalogs, as well as wallpaper books and fabric books. I will also be putting anything that does not “fit” or that I can’t use in my condo in this space. It is my solution for now. I have a desk, chair, bench, bookcase, sofa table, and baker’s rack that I know are coming over. These will be useful for my new Denise Fogarty Interiors space. I can then reassess and figure out what I will be bringing to consignment shops to resell and what I should keep for my new shop. I know I am going to have lots of accessories, as well—artwork that won’t fit or work, lamps that won’t fit or work, etc. For now, I’m going to have to see how much I can fit into 10’ x 20’ while keeping the area workable!

Living With Less, Enjoying Relationships More

Nothing “downsized” about our balcony view!

I’m very excited about living with less. After moving my kids into their small apartment in NYC I was envious. Everything seemed so efficient to me. We really don’t need much to keep us going. Fewer clothes means fewer choices and it is much easier to get dressed in the morning. How often do you really use all those gadgets in your kitchen? Do I really need eight different sized whisks? It will be a real testament to how much (or little) I need. In ramping up to the move my husband and I have grown closer, living in a smaller space and seeing each other more often. It is nice, I must say. The one thing we haven’t downsized is our view! Check out this sunset picture from our lanai. The tile installation is almost complete.

I will be keeping you posted after we move and I purge some more. I think both my husband and I are excited and I cannot see us ever wanting to move back into a large home where you become a slave to the daily activities of caring for so much space.
